On April 28, 2026, GitHub, Microsoft's code hosting platform, announced that its AI programming tool, GitHub Copilot, will transition from a fixed subscription model to a consumption-based billing model starting June 1. From that date, all subscription plans will no longer use "premium request" counts. Instead, each subscription will be allocated an equivalent value of GitHub AI Credits monthly, with paid users able to purchase additional credits. Usage will be calculated based on Token consumption, including input, output, and cached Tokens, with specific rates following the public API pricing of each model. GitHub explained that Copilot has evolved into an agent platform capable of executing long-duration, multi-step autonomous coding sessions and invoking the latest models to traverse entire repositories, making the existing billing method unsustainable. Consumption-based billing will help maintain long-term service reliability and reduce restrictions on heavy users. Meanwhile, the base subscription prices remain unchanged: Copilot Pro is priced at $10/month, including $10 worth of AI Credits; Copilot Pro+ is $39/month, including $39 worth of AI Credits; Copilot Business is $19/user/month, and Copilot Enterprise is $39/user/month, both including equivalent monthly AI Credits allocations. Code completion and Next Edit suggestion features remain included in each subscription plan and do not consume AI Credits. Enterprise customers will gain greater flexibility with this adjustment. Business and Enterprise users will have a shared credit pool across the entire organization, allowing unused credits from light users to offset consumption by heavy users within the same organization. GitHub will also provide promotional credits for Business and Enterprise customers for three months—June, July, and August—and allow administrators to set budget limits at the enterprise, cost center, or user level. Special transitional arrangements have been made for existing annual subscription users.
