On April 15, Bloomberg reported on a groundbreaking study revealing that nearly half of the medical advice dispensed by AI chatbots is flawed, with almost 20% being severely inaccurate. This research scrutinized five prominent platforms, including ChatGPT, and discovered that while they fared reasonably well in answering closed-ended questions, as well as those pertaining to vaccines and cancer, they fell short when dealing with open-ended inquiries and topics related to stem cells and nutrition. Often, the responses were delivered with confidence yet were devoid of substantiating evidence. Moreover, none of the platforms could furnish comprehensive references. Notably, only Meta AI declined to respond on two occasions. The study cautions that AI chatbots, lacking medical credentials and clinical acumen, could, if deployed on a large scale, intensify the dissemination of misinformation.
