John Giannandrea, Apple’s former head of artificial intelligence (AI), is set to officially depart from his role this week following a transitional phase. This executive shake-up first came to light in March 2025, largely driven by Apple’s AI initiatives falling short of expectations, including the underperformance of Apple Intelligence and repeated delays in the upgraded Siri.

In December 2025, Apple announced Giannandrea’s planned retirement for 2026 and promptly reorganized his remaining responsibilities. Since then, he has continued in a consultant capacity, pending the full vesting of his equity incentives. With Apple’s next stock vesting date set for April 15, his tenure will formally conclude this week.

This high-level reshuffle underscores Apple’s gradual recalibration of its AI strategy. Whether decentralizing management will enhance operational efficiency, however, remains an open question.
