According to Cnbeta, amid substantial losses and the pressing need for monetization in the AI sector, Microsoft Copilot has come under fire for automatically inserting advertisements into code submission requests on GitHub and GitLab, impacting over 1.5 million pull requests. This issue was initially uncovered by Melbourne-based developer Zach Manson. His team, utilizing Copilot to correct spelling mistakes, was surprised to discover that the system had automatically appended promotional content for the Raycast tool in the description. A technical investigation revealed the presence of concealed HTML comment tags within the pertinent code, confirming that the action stemmed from Microsoft. Besides Raycast, promotions for ecosystem integrations like VS Code and Slack were also embedded. Microsoft responded by clarifying that the issue stemmed from a programming error and was not a deliberate attempt to place advertisements, and that the related prompts have been eliminated. Martin Woodward, GitHub's Vice President of Developer Relations, also reiterated that GitHub will not insert (note: 'implant' has been translated to 'insert' for proper English usage while preserving the original context) ads on the platform in the future.
