This afternoon, NeurIPS, one of the three premier conferences in the AI realm, released a statement on X, expressing regret over the previously contentious sanctions compliance clause that had sparked widespread debate. The statement clarified that, during the preparation of the NeurIPS 2026 guidebook, a link to a U.S. government sanctions inquiry tool was inadvertently incorporated, and its reach surpassed the actual restrictions that NeurIPS was required to adhere to. This mishap stemmed from a miscommunication between the organizing foundation and the legal team, and at no point was there an intent to broaden the scope of participation limitations.
