Recently, court documents that were previously under seal have come to light, revealing that in February 2024, prior to Musk putting forward a proposal to acquire OpenAI, he inquired whether Zuckerberg would be interested in bidding for its intellectual property. On the evening of February 3, 2025, Zuckerberg sent a text message to Musk. In the message, he mentioned the progress being made at the DOGE office, stated that the team there would take care of related matters, and expressed his willingness to lend a hand.

Less than half an hour after receiving the message, Musk extended an invitation to Zuckerberg and others, asking them to participate in the bidding process for OpenAI's intellectual property. In response, Zuckerberg suggested arranging an in-person meeting and said he would make a phone call the next morning. However, it remains unclear whether this call actually occurred, and a spokesperson from Meta declined to provide any comments on the matter.

Previously released OpenAI documents indicate that Musk had included Zuckerberg on a list of potential financing contacts. Nevertheless, neither Zuckerberg nor Meta signed a consent agreement regarding this. On February 10, 2024, Musk's consortium submitted an acquisition offer worth $94.7 billion. Their aim was to gain control over OpenAI's non-profit entity and prevent it from transitioning into a for-profit organization. In response, OpenAI's CEO turned down the offer and instead proposed acquiring Twitter for $9.74 billion.
