The advertising pilot program for ChatGPT, launched by OpenAI in the United States, has achieved an impressive milestone by surpassing $100 million in annualized revenue within just six weeks. This accomplishment underscores the robust early market demand for OpenAI's advertising services. In January of this year, OpenAI initiated the display of ads to a select group of U.S. users. These ads are presented separately from ChatGPT's responses, ensuring that they do not interfere with the output content and that user conversations remain confidential, not being shared with marketers. Presently, around 85% of users are eligible to view ads, yet fewer than 20% actually encounter them on a daily basis, indicating a substantial potential for further monetization. The program has maintained consumer trust, as evidenced by low ad rejection rates and an increasing relevance of the ads displayed. OpenAI intends to extend the pilot to other countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, in the upcoming weeks. Already, over 600 advertisers are on board, with nearly 80% of small and medium-sized enterprises showing keen interest. In April, OpenAI will roll out a self-serve ad placement feature and has appointed David Dugan, a former advertising executive at Meta, as the head of its global advertising solutions team.
