Microsoft recently rolled out an update for the Copilot app (version 146.0.3856.63) to Windows Insider users. However, according to tests by Windows Latest, the app has regressed from a native application built on the WinUI framework to a WebView wrapper solution. Technically, native apps are built directly on the system framework, while wrapper versions rely on Microsoft Edge or Chromium's rendering engine for their interfaces. The new Copilot runs multiple Edge browser subprocesses in the background, and its settings interface version number now syncs with that of the Microsoft Edge browser. This regression comes less than a year after Microsoft promised a native implementation. Over the next few weeks, this change will be rolled out to non-preview channels and may not allow reverting to the native version.
