Taobao Flash Sale has unveiled the open-source, vertical-domain large model ‘Bai Ze’ (Ostrakon-VL), with relevant academic papers published in January 2026. This marks the first multimodal large language model in China specifically designed for food service kitchens and retail settings. It is now operational in real-world environments, with its technical capabilities freely available to the entire industry. Built on the $Qwen3-VL-8B$ architecture, ‘Bai Ze’ is optimized to recognize image features relevant to food service. This enables it to monitor kitchen behavior and issue violation alerts, effectively addressing long-standing challenges in traditional food safety governance. Furthermore, the research team has introduced the public benchmark test set, ShopBench. This open-source initiative reinforces primary accountability for food safety, expedites the intelligent transformation of the ‘Transparent Kitchens, Bright Dining Rooms’ program, and positions AI as the driving force behind future standardization efforts in the food service and retail sectors.
