On February 28, 2026, Anthropic issued a statement saying that it had not yet received direct communication from the Department of Defense or the White House regarding the status of negotiations, and stated that it would challenge any determination of supply chain risks in court. The company believes that designating it as a supply chain risk is an unprecedented action, as such determinations have historically been targeted only at U.S. adversaries and have never been publicly applied to U.S. companies. Anthropic also claimed that this determination is legally untenable and would set a dangerous precedent for U.S. companies negotiating with the government.
