As its competitors embrace advertising as a means to monetize their technological advancements, AI startup Perplexity has taken a bold step in the opposite direction by abandoning its advertising business altogether. In 2024, the company experimented with incorporating advertisements, only to find that the revenue generated was woefully inadequate. Specifically, advertising revenue for the fourth quarter of 2024 amounted to a mere $20,000—a paltry sum when juxtaposed with the company's staggering $20 billion valuation.
Perplexity harbors concerns that advertising could erode the trust its users place in the platform. Consequently, it began to gradually phase out advertising at the close of the previous year. As it stands, the company has no intentions of reviving or expanding its advertising operations in the foreseeable future.
