On January 29, reports emerged indicating that the United Kingdom intends to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to propel the growth of its key industries. The strategy also encompasses the creation of new job opportunities in certain sectors to compensate for potential job losses elsewhere due to AI advancements. UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Liz Kendall stated on Wednesday that the government is committed to providing AI training for all employees, aiming to equip the UK workforce with the essential skills for the future.

Kendall expressed that there is currently insufficient evidence to conclude that AI will lead to a widespread decline in employment. Nevertheless, she acknowledged that entry-level hiring in sectors such as finance and law is experiencing the effects. A research report published by Morgan Stanley this week revealed that, over the past year, AI has contributed to a net decrease of 8% in employment within the UK, a rate surpassing that of other comparable economies. Kendall underscored the importance of boosting productivity as a pivotal factor in ensuring that AI ultimately results in a net gain in employment for the UK.
