On January 27, the European Commission launched two regulatory actions aimed at ensuring Google’s adherence to its obligations under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This move also marked the official start of a regulatory dialogue with Google concerning its compliance in areas specified by the DMA. The first regulatory action obliges Google to enable third-party developers to achieve free and effective interoperability with the hardware and software functions controlled by the Android system. A key focus here is on the functions used by Google’s proprietary AI services, like Gemini. The second action mandates Google to allow third-party online search engine providers to access anonymized data from Google Search, including ranking, query, click, and browsing data. This access must be provided under terms that are fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory.
