According to a Reuters report, in January 2026, Google reached a $68 million settlement in response to a class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit accused Google's voice assistant, Google Assistant, of unlawfully eavesdropping on users and leveraging the obtained data for advertising. The plaintiffs alleged that the voice assistant would keep recording even after erroneously picking up wake words, and that this recorded data was subsequently employed for targeted advertising. Google, however, refuted any allegations of misconduct, explaining that the settlement was reached purely to sidestep potential litigation risks and associated expenses. The settlement agreement has now been submitted to the court for approval, after which it will come into effect.
