A survey report released by the Japan Freelance Union indicates that more than one-tenth of Japanese manga artists and illustrators have seen their incomes decline over the past year, largely due to the influence of generative AI. The survey, which gathered responses from 24,991 individuals, found that 12% of participants attributed their income loss to generative AI. Some creators reported salary cuts ranging from 10% to 50%, and in some cases, reductions exceeding 50%. Many clients now seem to presume that creators will utilize AI tools, often without first inquiring about pricing. As a result, they demand quicker turnaround times and lower fees, or in some instances, opt to rely entirely on generative AI. This trend has made it increasingly difficult for creators to secure work. A staggering 88.6% of respondents feel that generative AI threatens their livelihoods, while 62.9% expressed that they neither currently use nor plan to use generative AI in the future. Furthermore, the rise of generative AI has sparked copyright disputes and reputational risks. According to the survey, 77.8% of respondents have witnessed peers encounter these challenges, and 14.5% have personally experienced them. In response, 92.8% of respondents urged for legislation requiring the disclosure of copyrighted materials used in training AI models.
