At the World Economic Forum, NVIDIA's CEO, Jensen Huang, reassured that there's no need for undue concern over artificial intelligence (AI) posing long-term unemployment risks. He emphasized the burgeoning demand for data center construction, highlighting that roles such as plumbers, electricians, and construction workers have the potential to command 'six-figure annual incomes.' According to Huang, AI will be a catalyst for large-scale infrastructure projects, ushering in trillions of dollars in fresh investment and nearly doubling salary levels in the affected sectors.
Echoing Huang's sentiment, Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir, shared similar optimism. Likewise, the CEO of CoreWeave pointed out the escalating demand for a diverse range of workers within the data center industry. NVIDIA, riding the wave of the data center construction boom, is poised for significant growth. Analysts forecast that its data center chip sales could soar to nearly $200 billion by 2025.
However, the impact of AI on the job market is already becoming apparent. The CEO of Anthropic raised a red flag, cautioning about a potential 'white-collar massacre,' where certain job positions might face elimination. While the long-term benefits of technological advancements may ultimately surpass the negative repercussions, it remains imperative to address the looming risks of high unemployment and underemployment head-on.
