On January 9, Thomas Renier, a spokesperson for the European Commission, clarified that on the 8th, the European Commission had formally requested the U.S.-based social media platform X to preserve all internal documents and data related to its integrated chatbot, 'Grok,' until the end of 2026. Developed by xAI—a company founded by U.S. entrepreneur Elon Musk—'Grok' is seamlessly integrated into Musk's social media platform, X. Recently, some users on the X platform have exploited 'Grok' to manipulate images and videos, resulting in the creation and dissemination of explicit, false content depicting real individuals. The victims of this misuse include hundreds of adult women and minors.

Renier emphasized that the European Commission views this matter with the utmost seriousness and has chosen to extend the 'data retention' mandate initially issued to the X platform in 2025. Previously, this requirement primarily focused on platform algorithms and the dissemination of illegal content. On the 4th, the X platform responded to the ensuing controversy, stating that it would take decisive action against illegal content. This includes deleting offending content, permanently banning accounts involved in such activities, and collaborating with local governments and law enforcement agencies as necessary.
