On December 10, 2025, Bloomberg broke the news that Meta, previously the undisputed global leader in open-source technology, has been discreetly utilizing Alibaba's open-source model, Qwen, for distillation training in its latest AI model endeavor, dubbed "Avocado." This development triggered a surge of over 4% in Alibaba's stock price during pre-market trading in the U.S. A mere year earlier, Meta's founder, Mark Zuckerberg, had passionately advocated for the construction of an open-source ecosystem revolving around U.S.-based models. However, confronted with the stagnant growth trajectory of its Llama series and the meteoric rise of Chinese models, Meta has made a pragmatic strategic shift. Indications of a power realignment within the open-source domain had already begun to surface. In August 2024, for the first time, the number of derivative models built upon Qwen eclipsed those based on Llama. By October 2025, Qwen's global download figures had also surpassed its rivals. NVIDIA's CEO, Jensen Huang, candidly remarked that open-source technology has now attained paramount importance, with China emerging as a frontrunner in this domain.
