Journalists and writers affiliated with The New York Times, such as John Carreyrou, have initiated legal action against six technology companies, including Google and OpenAI (the Open Artificial Intelligence Research Center). They allege that these companies have utilized copyrighted books without obtaining the necessary permissions to train their artificial intelligence systems. In August of this year, Anthropic settled with a cohort of writers who had launched a class-action lawsuit concerning copyright issues related to AI training. As part of the settlement, Anthropic agreed to a payment of $1.5 billion. The plaintiffs in that case accused Anthropic of plagiarizing content from millions of books, a claim that was central to their legal argument.
