On December 23, Business Insider carried a report stating that Michael Burry, the real-life inspiration behind the film "The Big Short," took aim at Nvidia. He argued that the company's push for manufacturing power-hungry graphics chips to fuel AI advancements might result in the United States ceding the AI competition to China. Burry highlighted that China's installed power generation capacity has already more than doubled that of the US and is growing at a faster pace. Meanwhile, Nvidia has concentrated its AI innovation efforts on tackling the power supply and cooling challenges associated with these high-energy-consuming chips. In his view, the US ought to pivot towards developing AI-specific ASIC chips, rather than persisting with reliance on power-intensive general-purpose GPUs.
