Recently, Disney served Google with a cease-and-desist order, alleging that Google's AI model has violated the copyrights of numerous iconic film and TV productions, such as Frozen and Deadpool. Disney contended that Google's AI model has produced content that closely resembles these works, amounting to 'widespread' copyright infringement. Moreover, it accused Google of distributing these infringing materials for financial gain, likening the process to a 'virtual vending machine' churning out unauthorized copies.
Disney further pointed out that, in prior discussions with Google, the tech giant had displayed a lackadaisical approach towards safeguarding intellectual property rights. It's worth noting that, just before issuing this notice, Disney had inked a multi-billion-dollar collaboration deal with OpenAI. The partnership aims to introduce AI-generated videos starring over 200 renowned characters, slated for release on the Disney Plus streaming service.
In response to these allegations, Google asserted that it enjoys a positive working relationship with Disney and is committed to ongoing dialogue. The company emphasized that its AI model is trained on publicly accessible web data and highlighted that it has implemented a groundbreaking copyright management system to prevent such issues.
