According to BusinessWire, on December 8 (local time), universal processor design firm Tachyum revealed that it had initiated legal proceedings to defend its exclusive rights to the registered "TPU" trademark. The company is demanding that Google cease utilizing the "TPU" acronym within the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. For Tachyum, "TPU" denotes the "Tachyum Processing Unit," a licensable hardware intellectual property (IP) core tailored for Internet of Things (IoT) and edge AI inference applications. Tachyum submitted its trademark application in 2015 and has been the rightful holder of the trademark since October 2020. In contrast, Google's "TPU" is an acronym for "Tensor Processing Unit," with its inaugural product launching in 2015. Tachyum contends that, given both companies' "TPUs" function within the AI market sphere, Google's continued use without permission amounts to trademark infringement.
