On December 9, Kai-Fu Lee, the Chairman of Sinovation Ventures and CEO of 01.AI, penned an article for the UK's esteemed Financial Times. In this piece, he posited that open-source AI represents a significant national advantage for China. Citing the R1 large language model, recently unveiled by DeepSeek, Lee highlighted that its performance stands on par with leading U.S. AI models, yet it demands significantly less computational power. What's more, the model was made available in an open-source format, empowering anyone to freely download, adapt, and utilize it for commercial ventures without incurring any costs.

Kai-Fu Lee expressed his belief that this open-source paradigm mirrors the essence of collective learning, rather than relying solely on the brilliance of individual geniuses. Presently, a slew of Chinese enterprises, including Baidu, Zhipu, Moonshot AI, and Meituan, are harnessing open-source models to propel the swift advancement of AI technology. In stark contrast, the majority of U.S. companies persist in developing their state-of-the-art large language models in a closed, proprietary manner.

Lee underscored the transformative potential of open-source AI, stating that it can dismantle technological barriers, nurture innovation, and equip Chinese AI firms with the capability to compete on an equal footing with their U.S. counterparts.
