Spurred on by the explosive growth of generative artificial intelligence, American universities are witnessing a significant transformation in their academic major offerings. A growing number of students are turning their backs on traditional computer science majors and instead, pursuing undergraduate degrees focused on artificial intelligence. Once just an elective option within computer science departments, AI has now blossomed into standalone colleges, full-fledged majors, and even cross-disciplinary training frameworks at a multitude of universities. Take, for example, the new AI major at the University of California, San Diego, which has drawn in 150 first-year students. Meanwhile, the College of AI and Cybersecurity at the University of South Florida Tampa boasts an enrollment of over 3,000 students. The AI and Decision-Making major, launched by MIT in 2022, has quickly ascended to become the institution's second-most popular undergraduate major this year, trailing only behind computer science. This shift heralds a new era of heightened specialization within the field of computer science.
