Google is currently conducting an experimental trial where AI-generated headlines are being used to substitute the original news headlines in Google Discover. Although some of these AI-crafted headlines exhibit a reasonable level of quality, a significant number are found to be misleading, nonsensical, or confusing when taken out of context. This situation not only results in a deterioration of headline quality but also undermines the autonomy of news organizations in marketing their content. As a consequence, readers may easily fall into the trap of believing that the media is engaging in clickbait practices.

While certain news entries do feature a disclaimer stating, "Generated by AI, may contain errors," this notice fails to clearly delineate which specific parts of the headline have been altered. Consequently, readers are compelled to click on "View more" to access the original headline. At present, this initiative is merely in the experimental phase. Should there be a strong negative public reaction, Google may reconsider or discontinue the project. In recent years, Google has demonstrated a propensity to prioritize the promotion of its own products while diminishing the referral traffic to news websites. Despite its assertions that AI-driven search will not spell the doom of the internet, the company continues to grapple with gaining the trust and approval of news organizations.
