On Tuesday (local time), the United Nations Development Programme unveiled a report, cautioning that unless nations implement strategies to leverage AI in bridging the divide in accessing fundamental living necessities and advanced knowledge, the lion's share of AI's benefits will persistently be cornered by affluent countries. Drawing a parallel between the present trajectory of AI development and the "Great Divergence" witnessed during the Industrial Revolution, the report underscores that AI has the potential to intensify existing disparities among nations. In light of this, the report urges governments across the globe to ramp up investments, enhance digital infrastructure, and overhaul education and training frameworks. It also advocates for fostering fair competition and bolstering social security measures.
