SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son has declared that, had the company possessed boundless financial resources to fuel its upcoming wave of artificial intelligence investments—including placing substantial bets on OpenAI—he would have retained all his Nvidia shares. This marks Masayoshi Son's inaugural remarks regarding SoftBank's surprising decision to fully divest its Nvidia shares in November. He also debunked the idea that there is an AI investment bubble. During a forum on Monday, Son clarified that SoftBank's complete sell-off of Nvidia shares was driven purely by the necessity to secure capital for initiatives such as data center construction. “I wasn't eager to part with a single share,” he remarked. “The funds were simply more crucial for investments in ventures like OpenAI. I parted with Nvidia stocks with tears in my eyes.”
