On November 24, the South Korean National Police Agency revealed its plan to initiate a pilot project for an artificial intelligence system in December. This project involves installing AI-powered traffic cameras in Seoul to better manage traffic congestion at intersections.

From December of this year to February next year, a trial run of the 'Unattended Intersection Tailgating Enforcement System' will take place at an intersection in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The system is designed to issue warnings to vehicles that, despite entering the intersection on a green light, end up getting stuck and blocking traffic flow once the light turns red. However, this does not apply to vehicles that are forced to halt due to emergencies like traffic accidents or vehicle breakdowns.

The new system harnesses AI-based video analysis technology, which was developed through a research endeavor by the South Korean National Police Agency. This technology significantly boosts the accuracy of enforcement. Moreover, the system is capable of simultaneously detecting and handling multiple violations, including running red lights, speeding, and tailgating, all through a single device. This not only reduces the need for maintenance but also enhances overall efficiency.

The South Korean police have outlined their plans to install similar cameras at 10 intersections that are chronically plagued by congestion by 2026. Furthermore, they aim to expand the deployment to cover 883 intersections prone to congestion across the nation by 2027.
