On November 8, 2025, OpenAI rolled out GPT-5-Codex-Mini, an AI programming model that offers great cost-effectiveness and is crafted exclusively for developers. It serves as a simplified iteration of GPT-5-Codex. Launched in September of the same year, GPT-5-Codex is built upon the GPT-5 framework and fine-tuned for intelligent programming endeavors, substantially enhancing both reasoning capabilities and programming efficiency. This model is adept at managing a comprehensive array of tasks, spanning from project initiation to code restructuring.
While GPT-5-Codex-Mini exhibits a marginal dip in performance compared to its full-fledged counterpart, it compensates with a significantly lower price point, granting developers access to roughly four times the usage allowance. This makes it a perfect fit for tackling less complex engineering projects or when nearing the upper bounds of usage limits. The model is currently accessible through CLI and IDE extensions, with API compatibility slated for imminent release. Moreover, OpenAI has implemented backend refinements to Codex, guaranteeing a seamless user experience, and has expanded the rate limits for a subset of ChatGPT users.
