On November 17, Soumith Chintala, the founder of PyTorch, formally bid farewell to Meta. Having dedicated 11 years of his career to Meta, Chintala spent close to 8 years at the helm of the PyTorch project. Under his leadership, PyTorch evolved from a mere laboratory project into a globally recognized mainstream AI framework, boasting a usage rate of over 90%.

Chintala expressed that he didn't want to confine his entire career to PyTorch and was eager to venture into new domains beyond Meta. He admitted that the decision to leave was an "incredibly tough" one for him. In November 2024, he and his wife started to lay the groundwork for his exit. After finishing his paternity leave in August 2025, he verified that the core team was well - equipped to carry on the work. He has unwavering confidence in the team's abilities, both in terms of technology and management. At present, the team can operate smoothly with minimal intervention from him.
