Google has unveiled its "Suncatcher" initiative, aimed at investigating the viability of establishing AI data centers that harness solar power in space. The tech giant intends to partner with Planet Labs to deploy two prototype satellites as soon as the start of 2027. This move is to assess the practicality of situating AI computing capabilities in low-Earth orbit. Google emphasized that with the escalating demand for both computational resources and energy to fuel artificial intelligence, the perpetual sunlight available in space presents a significant opportunity to ease the energy burden on Earth. Furthermore, the company highlighted that its in-house-developed TPU chips will accompany the satellites into space, where they will continuously draw upon solar energy while orbiting in geosynchronous positions.
