At the AfroTech conference in Houston, Mustafa Suleyman, the head of AI at Microsoft, firmly stated that the tech industry’s pursuit of “conscious AI” is misguided, and he described efforts to develop such systems as “absurd.” He stressed that following this line of thought would steer development in the wrong direction. Drawing on the theory of “biological naturalism,” Suleyman highlighted that consciousness is a unique trait inherent to living organisms. He explained that AI is merely capable of simulating narratives, lacking the ability to truly experience genuine emotions like pain and sorrow. Suleyman reaffirmed that AI does not—and is unlikely to ever—possess consciousness.
