In a research paper released on Tuesday, Google unveiled its ambitious 'Project Suncatcher.' This project entails launching Google's self-developed AI chips, known as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), into low-Earth orbit. By positioning the chips in this specific orbit, they will remain perpetually within the sun's visible range, enabling them to harness solar energy for continuous operation. Google has teamed up with the satellite firm Planet Labs to launch two experimental satellites in 2027. Each satellite will be equipped with four TPUs, with the primary goal of evaluating the viability of on-orbit operations and distributed learning.
