According to the latest court filings, after Sam Altman briefly stepped down as CEO of OpenAI two years ago, OpenAI had discussions about a merger with AI rival Anthropic. In his testimony, Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former chief scientist of OpenAI, stated that in November 2023, Anthropic made a merger proposal that would have allowed Anthropic to take over the leadership of OpenAI. However, due to some practical obstacles, the merger discussions ultimately ended without result. Sutskever said he was almost the only person on the board who opposed the merger.
