The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft Australia and its parent company, Microsoft, alleging that they provided misleading subscription options and price increase information to nearly 2.7 million Australian users after integrating the AI assistant Copilot into Microsoft 365 plans. Starting from October 31, 2024, Microsoft informed subscribers of individual and family plans with automatic renewal enabled that to maintain their subscriptions, they would need to accept Copilot integration and pay a higher price, or choose to cancel. However, the ACCC claims that this information is false or misleading because Microsoft did not disclose a third option: users could retain their existing features without Copilot at a lower price through the classic plan.
