On October 20, Amazon made a groundbreaking announcement regarding its foray into the nuclear energy sector. The tech giant revealed plans to construct its inaugural small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) plant in the vicinity of Richland, Washington. This strategic move is aimed at bolstering the reliability of its data services and averting potential power outages in the future.
The ambitious project is a collaborative effort involving Amazon, Energy Northwest—the energy agency of Washington State, and X-energy, a renowned developer of SMR technology. Initially, the plan entails the construction of four reactors, with the flexibility to expand up to 12. Each reactor is designed to have a maximum generating capacity of 960 megawatts, ensuring a substantial and sustainable energy supply.
