Hinton stated on the podcast hosted by talk show host Jon Stewart that although the U.S. currently holds a leading position in the AI race, this advantage is difficult to sustain. He pointed out that undermining funding for basic science, attacking research universities, and cutting long-term funding will lead to catastrophic consequences. Hinton emphasized that the extent of the U.S.'s lead in the AI field is far lower than its own perception, and weakening support for top universities will have severe consequences. He cited deep learning as an example, stating that the AI revolution stems from long-term funding for basic research rather than massive financial investments. Currently, officials from the Trump administration have threatened to cut federal research funding for multiple universities. Hinton also said that within the next three and a half years, the U.S. will find it difficult to assume international leadership in the safe development of AI, and that this role should be taken on by China or Europe.
