Republican U.S. Senator Josh Hawley has broadened the scope of Congress's inquiry into AI chatbots. Last month, he launched an investigation into Meta, driven by concerns that its chatbot might be involved in 'flirtatious' exchanges with teenagers. On Tuesday, during a Senate hearing, the parents of affected teenagers shared their testimonies about the detrimental effects caused by chatbots. Following this, Hawley extended the investigation to encompass companies like OpenAI and Google. On Thursday, he dispatched a letter to OpenAI's CEO, Altman, highlighting evidence that suggests AI chatbots present significant risks to children. He demanded that OpenAI address a series of questions by October 17, encompassing areas such as product development, design, and incidents involving teenage victims. As of the time of reporting, OpenAI has not yet issued a response to this demand.
