The complaint alleges that Google’s AI Overview feature, prominently displayed at the top of search results, unlawfully leverages content from its news reporting. This practice, the suit claims, has led to a substantial decline in traffic to Rolling Stone’s website and a drop in advertising revenue exceeding one-third. The media group asserts that Google effectively coerces publishers into supplying content for the AI Overview feature by threatening to exclude their material from search results if they refuse, thus placing them in an untenable position. In response, Google maintained that the AI Overview feature improves the search experience, fosters new avenues for content discovery, and intends to vigorously contest the allegations.
