On Tuesday, Anthropic and OpenAI separately announced the launch of new, lower-cost artificial intelligence models in response to intense competition from cheaper open-weight rivals. OpenAI added two tiers, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, to its GPT-6 series, with API prices slashed by 50% compared to the promotional price of GPT-5.6. On the same day, Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5, a new addition to the Claude 5.5 series, which the company claims offers higher token efficiency and operates at approximately 40% lower costs than Opus 5.
