On March 12, Bloomberg disclosed that Microsoft is vying with China's DeepSeek for a foothold in the African market. The tech giant has outlined plans to partner with educational institutions and other entities throughout the year to impart AI technology skills to three million Africans, with a particular emphasis on South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Morocco. Additionally, Microsoft is forging a partnership with MTN, Africa's premier telecommunications company, to offer its Microsoft 365 application suite, complete with the Copilot digital assistant, to MTN's extensive user base of 300 million. The president of Microsoft's Middle East and Africa division elucidated that this strategic initiative is designed to diminish the expenses associated with fostering AI proficiency and to counterbalance the proactive dissemination of Chinese technology across Africa.
