Ultium Cells, a joint venture between GM and LG Energy Solution, has unveiled plans to upgrade their Tennessee facility to manufacture cost-effective lithium iron phosphate batteries. By forgoing expensive minerals such as cobalt and nickel, commonly used in lithium-ion batteries, these new batteries offer significant economic benefits. The revamped plant is anticipated to commence commercial production in 2027. Ultium Cells operates three plants across the United States, with the Tennessee Spring Hill facility, boasting an annual production capacity of 50GWh, set for the upgrade. This plant primarily supplies batteries for models like the Cadillac Lyriq.
