On June 19, Japanese media conveyed that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) had announced on the 17th that from September 2028, newly introduced automatic transmission vehicles will be required to be fitted with safety devices designed to prevent accidental accelerator pedal activation. The regulation extends to imported new automatic vehicles, with an enforcement date of September 2029. These devices, which can intervene autonomously when the driver mistakenly presses the accelerator instead of the brake, aim to avert sudden vehicle acceleration and minimize accident risks, particularly addressing common operational errors among senior drivers. Notably, this technology was endorsed by the United Nations as an international standard in November 2024.
