Amidst these events, Waymo's autonomous vehicles unexpectedly found themselves at the center of the controversy. According to local media reports and social media footage, at least five Waymo autonomous vehicles were targeted by protesters, sustaining damage including punctured tires, shattered windows, and graffiti slogans opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Following these attacks, at least three electric driverless cars caught fire, leaving the area enveloped in the acrid smell of lithium battery explosions.
