A recent video incident highlights a critical safety concern regarding the use of modern technology. While filming, the camera of an iPhone 16 Pro Max was reportedly damaged by the roof-mounted LiDAR sensor of a Volvo EX90. The footage shows that upon pointing the phone's telephoto lens directly at the LiDAR, the screen immediately exhibited colored spots, signaling permanent laser-induced damage to the CMOS image sensor pixels. The Volvo EX90 is equipped with a Luminar semi-solid-state LiDAR operating at a wavelength of 1550nm, which, while adhering to the Class 1 laser standard for eye safety, can pose a risk to camera sensors lacking specialized infrared filtering protection.
In response, Volvo has officially cautioned users against directly filming the LiDAR system and advises maintaining a safe distance or turning off the vehicle's power when engaging in such activities.
