The Trump administration has directed the U.S. Department of Commerce to commence an investigation into the imports of medium and heavy trucks and their components, with the aim of evaluating their impact on national security. This action is widely perceived as a continuation of the administration's tariff strategies. As per a notice released in the Federal Register, the investigation will primarily focus on the potential national security risks posed by a select few foreign suppliers, who are noted to dominate the U.S. import market partly due to government subsidies and "predatory trade practices." Additionally, the scope of the probe will encompass whether domestic manufacturers can satisfy U.S. domestic demand and whether foreign nations could potentially "weaponize" their control over truck and component supplies by imposing export restrictions.
