On April 23, analyst Kyle Stock observed a notable surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales in the United States during the first quarter of 2023, reaching 294,000 units. This represents a 10.6% increase compared to the same period last year, defying the usual sluggish sales trends observed between January and March. Despite these being traditionally slow months for car sales, EVs outperformed both passenger cars and trucks. Despite challenges faced by Tesla and the Trump administration's intentions to reduce policy support, the appeal of electric vehicles continues to intensify. Tesla's sales for this quarter witnessed a 9% year-on-year decline, causing its market share to shrink from nearly two-thirds to less than half. Conversely, total sales of other EV manufacturers saw a robust 32% increase. Of the approximately 63 EVs and trucks available on the market, a quarter are new models introduced within the past year, attracting a significant influx of new buyers. Furthermore, new EV prices have become more accessible, with data from industry body Cox indicating that the price differential between electric vehicles and gasoline-powered cars and trucks has narrowed to just $5,000.
