On March 27th, Lindsey James, a seasoned strategist at Quilter Investment, issued a report highlighting the potential severe consequences of President Trump's proposed 25% tariff on imported cars into the United States on the European and British automotive industries. The United States stands as a pivotal market for British car exports, accounting for approximately 18% of the total, while it receives over 20% of the eurozone's car exports. Notably, the automotive industry contributes 7% to the eurozone's GDP and supports 6% of its employment. James emphasized that the sector is already grappling with numerous challenges, including the shift towards electric vehicles, stringent regulations, a lengthening driver replacement cycle, and escalating energy costs. The imposition of tariff policies, she warned, would further exacerbate these difficulties.
