In response to the slowdown in global demand for electric vehicles, Toyota has decided to postpone the construction of a battery plant in Japan and is currently reassessing its electric vehicle strategy. Consequently, the company has revised its sales target for electric vehicles in 2026, lowering it from the previously projected 1.5 million units to 800,000 units. Currently, Toyota relies heavily on hybrid vehicles for its stable profits, with hybrid sales accounting for approximately 60% of its global market sales last year, whereas electric vehicle sales comprised only 1.4% of its total sales. Despite this, Toyota is actively expanding its presence in the Chinese market, with plans to build a Lexus electric vehicle factory and introduce low-cost electric vehicle models to cater to market demand.
