At a press conference on March 24, President Imai of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation stated that the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on steel, aluminum, automobiles, and other products might significantly decrease Japan's annual domestic crude steel production by millions of tonnes, potentially falling below 80 million tonnes. Earlier, on March 12, the United States had officially imposed a 25% tariff on all imported steel and aluminum. On the same day, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yoshihide Suga, expressed regret and dissatisfaction at the US decision not to grant Japan a 'tariff exemption' during a press conference, considering this move even more stringent than previous steel and aluminum tariffs.
